This timeframe coincides with the Sun’s entry into the Aries zodiac. This is a key astrological event that signals renewal and spiritual rebirth in Southeast Asian traditions.

The Astrological Significance of Songkran

The word “Songkran” originates from the Sanskrit term “Saṅkrānti,” meaning “movement” or “transition.”

It refers to the sun’s shift from Pisces to Aries, symbolizing the start of a new cosmic cycle. Aries, as the first zodiac sign, represents beginnings, growth, and transformation.

The timing is also important for agriculture, as it marks the onset of the rainy season, ensuring a fruitful harvest.

Mythological Origins of Songkran

1. The Tale of Sukhavati and the Restoration of Dhamma

In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a person or a being who attains enlightenment. Even after achieving it, they postpone their own nirvana. They make this sacrifice to help others achieve enlightenment.

In the golden city of Sukhavati in Suvannabhumi, Bodhisattva was born to a poor farming family.

The city was once prosperous. It then fell into moral decline. Elders were disrespected. Compassion was lost. Dhamma (Thai word , means: dharma) was forgotten.

Indra, King of Devas, looked down in dismay. He proclaimed:

“Glory (Siri) of humans lies in their faith in Dharma. There is no Glory without Dhamma.”

Instantly, the city was cursed with drought, garbage, disease, and chaos.

Led by the Bodhisattva, the people prayed to Mother Earth (Siri). Moved by their sincerity, she offered them:

  • A piece of divine fertile land
  • Sacred seeds and a rain-invoking song
  • Thanaka powder in many colors to protect their skin

The people pledged to follow Sila (virtue) and Uposatha (observances). When they sowed seeds and restored their ethical values, the crops flourished—on the very day the Sun entered Aries.(Astrological alignment)

To celebrate, they:

  • Washed the feet of elders
  • Offered delicious food and new clothes
  • Played with water and Thanaka powder
  • Donated generously to the needy

Indra again looked upon them and restored their lost glory. The day has been celebrated ever since as Maha Songkran, the true spiritual New Year.

2. The Legend of Kapila Brahma and the Songkran Goddesses

According to Buddhist scriptures from Wat Pho, a wise child named Thammabal (Dhammapala) was born.

This happened after his father prayed to Indra. Thammabal mastered sacred knowledge, languages, and Dhamma.

Kapila Brahma, after knowing this wanted to check the child’s knowledge. He challenged Thammabal with a riddle:

“Where does the glory (Sri) of man dwell—in the morning, at noon, and in the evening?”

Thammabal overheard eagles saying:

  • Morning: Glory is on the face
  • Noon: Glory rests on the chest
  • Evening: Glory lies in the feet

He answered correctly. Bound by honor, Kapila Brahma had to behead himself, but his head contained apocalyptic power.

His seven daughters stored it on a celestial tray (Phan). They perform a yearly procession called the Nang Songkran. They circle Mount Meru as the sun enters Aries.
