What is Sharad Purnima?

Sharad Purnima is one of the most significant festivals in the Hindu calendar, known for its deep spiritual and cultural importance.

On this day, it is believed that the full moon graces the sky with all sixteen Kala(s), making it the only day of the year when the moon shines in its complete glory.

In Hinduism, each Kala represents a unique human quality, and the presence of all sixteen Kala(s) signifies a perfect and complete personality.

According to the scriptures, Lord Krishna, the supreme incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born with all sixteen Kala(s). This made him the epitome of a perfect being. In contrast, Lord Rama, another revered avatar of Vishnu, was born with twelve Kala(s).

Spiritual Significance of Sharad Purnima:

Sharad Purnima is a day to honor Lord Chandra, the moon god. His blessings are considered especially potent on this night.

Newlywed women, who have taken a vow to observe Purnimasi fasting throughout the year, begin their fasts on this day. In Gujarat, this auspicious occasion is popularly known as Sharad Poonam.

The unique belief tied to this day is that the rays of the full moon have miraculous healing properties. They are said to nourish both the body and the soul.

Tradition holds that the moon drips divine nectar on the night of Sharad Purnima. Because of this, many people prepare a special dish called Rice Kheer.

This sweet dessert is made from cow’s milk, rice, and sugar. It is left outside under the moonlight to absorb the beneficial rays.

The moon-fortified Kheer is consumed the next morning as Prasad (blessed food), and it is shared with family members.

Sharad Purnima & Krishnaโ€™s Divine Dance: Raas Purnima

In the Brij region, Sharad Purnima is celebrated as Raas Purnima (เคฐเคพเคธ เคชเฅ‚เคฐเฅเคฃเคฟเคฎเคพ), marking the night of Lord Krishnaโ€™s divine dance with the Gopis of Vrindavan.

According to legend, Krishna played his enchanting flute, calling the Gopis to the forest, where they danced with him in divine ecstasy.

To fulfill each Gopi’s desire to be with him, Krishna multiplied himself, ensuring that no one felt left out. It is said that the night of Sharad Purnima was extended to a length equivalent to a night of Lord Brahmaโ€”billions of human years!

This dance, the Maha-Raas, symbolizes the eternal love between God and his devotees, making Sharad Purnima a celebration of divine love and devotion.
