Arjan Singh Nalwa: The Courageous Warrior

Arjan Vailly, was born circa 1876 in Rurka village, Ludhiana.

Arjan Singh Nalwa, a significant figure in Sikh history, was the son of Hari Singh Nalwa, a respected military commander during the Sikh Empire’s era in the early 19th century.

Arjan emerged as a formidable leader. He was a tall man, towering six and a half feet. He is renowned for his bravery, strategic prowess, and unwavering commitment to defending the Sikh Empire against adversaries like the Mughals and later, the British.

Renowned for his uncompromising stance against deceit, he was often seen carrying a long stick, known as a gandasa (axe).

While recognized for his considerable wealth and vast properties, he gained prominence for his kind nature, extending help to those in need.

Stories abound of his acts of valour. Once, to protect an individual from mistreatment, he reportedly broke a policeman’s arm, earning him the nickname ‘Vailly’ and cementing his reputation as Arjan Vailly. His humanitarian efforts extended beyond boundaries.

Vailly word is used in Punjabi for man. Vailly means a man who is not afraid of anyone and who never tolerates Injustice.

During the tumultuous 1947 partition, he played a pivotal role in assisting numerous members of the Muslim community in resettling in Malerkotla.

Notably, he ensured the safe passage of his friend Ralla Teli to Malerkotla, safeguarding his friend’s valuable possessions, including gold and silver, and subsequently delivering them to Ralla Teli’s son.

Accounts suggest that Arjan Vailly was a devout Amritdhari Sikh, deeply committed to his faith. His unwavering dedication to social causes led to his imprisonment in Ferozepur Jail due to his involvement in the ‘Punjabi Sooba Morcha.’

Despite this, his commitment to community service remained steadfast. Recognizing his contributions, the Punjab Government honoured him with a ‘Taabar Pattar,’ acknowledging his services. He continued tirelessly working for the welfare of his village.

His compassion extended to the younger generation as well. He earned the endearing title ‘Arjan Baba’ by distributing sweets to children who recited Gurbani Shabads, emphasizing his affectionate connection with the village’s youth and their spiritual development.

Arjan Singh Nalwa’s legacy is steeped in tales of his battlefield exploits, depicting him as a courageous and relentless warrior who fought fiercely for the protection and sovereignty of his people.
